Civil Rights Heritage Center Community Service Award for Undergraduates
This award recognizes IU South Bend students who demonstrate an understanding of the values of personal responsibility and commitment to community service. Freedom Summer Awards recognize and support IU South Bend undergraduate students who, seeking a deeper understanding of the importance and viability of personal commitment in a democratic society, choose to participate in one of the Freedom Summer study tour courses directed by the Civil Rights Heritage Center at IU South Bend.
Civil Rights Heritage Center Freedom Summer Awards are based upon assessment of the following:
A personal statement of purpose explaining how participation in a Freedom Summer study tour is expected to enhance your understanding of the values of the Civil Rights Movement and how it will impact your commitment to and sense of individual responsibility for promoting those values in your local community;
One letter of reference (from a non-relative) sent directly to the director of the Civil Rights Heritage Center;
Formal admission as an undergraduate student at IU South Bend; and
Completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Award
The dollar amount of each award varies, based upon the amount of funding available, but in no case is less than $500.
Responsibility
Recipients of the Freedom Summer Awards must agree to:
Participate fully in all Freedom Summer pre-trip activities, including group fundraisers;
Participate fully in all phases of the Freedom Summer study tour itself; and
Volunteer actively in the work of the Civil Rights Heritage Center during the academic year following participation in the Freedom Summer study tour.
Successful participation is determined by the assessment of the director of the Civil Rights Heritage Center.
Renewal
Scholarship awards are not automatically renewable. In order to be considered for additional years of funding, students meeting all of the criteria must complete a full application each year.
Submission And Deadline
Applications for the Civil Rights Heritage Center Freedom Summer Awards may be obtained from the Civil Rights Heritage Center or here. Completed applications for the award must be submitted to the Department of History, Indiana University South Bend, Wiekamp Hall 3248, 1700 Mishawaka Avenue, PO Box 7111, South Bend, Indiana 46634-7111, by March 4.
